As I'm going to have my own son bris-ed in the next couple of weeks...these thoughts came to mind.
A baby boy is given his Jewish name at the brit, ritual circumcision.1 The name chosen by the parents is considered prophetic.2 For this reason, it is customary for the couple not to discuss the name of their child with others, prior to the naming. The parents should also not call the child by the decided name, even between themselves, until it is bestowed at the circumcision.
1 Behold, you will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you shall call His name Yeshua. [g] 32 He will be great and will be called Ben-Elyon. Adonai Elohim will give Him the throne of David,[h] His father. 33 He shall reign over the house of Jacob for all eternity, and His kingdom will be without end.” She will give birth to a son; and you shall call His name Yeshua, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by Adonai through the prophet, saying, 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and give birth to a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” 24 When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did as the angel of Adonai commanded him and took Miriam as his wife. 25 But he did not know her intimately until she had given birth to a Son. And he called His name Yeshua.
and with last weeks parsha- Lamech lived 182 years and he fathered a son.
29 And he named him Noah saying, “This one will comfort us from our work and from the pain of our hands because of the ground which Adonai cursed.”
The Chasm Sofer brings down- that Noach was called a Man, Tzaddik, and a Tammim- indicating the 3 parts of Noachs life, A man of peace when among the evil generation- (this corresponds to Yeshua's life when he comes as a Testimony of Hatred similar to Joseph as well when he is a Testimony of hatred among his brothers, and the generation when Yeshua came was one filled with Baseless Hatred- the cause of the destruction both of the Temple and the world, and the Messiah. ) a Tzaddik while confined to the ark- (this can also be related to Yeshua's Tzaddik relationship to every believer despite his surroundings, and despite the fact of his death, and his continual attachment to souls down here, including souls which have sullied his name with anti-semitism). And finally a Tammim during the building of the the Tower of Babel, under Nimrod, Noach never faltered in his Emunnah and love of Hashem. (Yeshua in his Tammim state will never falter in his love of Hashem, he will bring the kingdom-in the midst of the reign of the evil one- known as the Anti-messiah. A large connection between the Tzaddikim. Something to think on as I prepare for my own son's Bris, and the prophetic nature of the naming, as well as the importance of the actual ceremony of circumcision. It is also a call for further my passion for Ahavas Yisroel, and Ahavas Chinam for the whole world. May this drash encourage you to pursue the lofty vision of Ahavas Chinam, and Ahavas Yisroel. May we speedily pursue Messiah and Torah to bring an end to Golus. We want Moshiach Now!
The Full Chassam Sofer quote- Finally, Noach had the ability to relate differently to the needs of various generations. As the Torah emphasizes in his generations. Each of the three characteristics used to define Noach, a man , righteous, and perfect refers to a particular phase of his life. Before the flood, in an era of constant bickering and strife, Noach was a man of peace. While confined to the Ark Noach acted righteously, by never complaining about his harsh surroundings. Finally in the era of the Tower builders who challenged Hashem's sovereignty, Noach remained perfectly loyal to Hashem.
